The Glick’s Story
As a young man in 1962, Louie Glick started Visalia Lockers and Wholesale Meats, where he soon discovered a tremendous need for the community to build a custom-cut retail meat market.
Louie followed his instincts and started building Glick’s in 1974 and opened the doors to the public in 1976. With his wife Dorothy “Dot,” daughter Susie, and siblings Bill and Doris working side by side—Louie answered a calling that has become iconic to our community still today.
Louie’s oldest daughter, Luanne, and her husband Jim Byrd, became instrumental in the business as Louie drew closer to retirement. Jim trained under Louie, learning everything to know about the meat market industry so he could step in and manage day-to-day operations. Jim became well respected in the industry and had a 25-year run until a tragedy. After his passing, Jim and Luanne’s daughter, Shelly, took over the business until its closing in 2010.
On April 1, 2015, Glick’s & Co. was established as James and Michelle Jessen purchased and took over the operations of Glick’s. After much consideration and many conversations, Susie felt it was a great fit. She now considers James and Michelle a part of the family. Although the business went through transitions over the years, the Jessens’ feel extremely fortunate to have reopened and kept a family legacy alive. Glick’s & Co. may have expanded, but the business will continue to offer the same great products and continue to offer customers a hometown butcher shop, just as it was intended from the beginning. With the addition of a one-of-a-kind burger joint and the Jessen’s experience, Glick’s & Co. is a unique gem to the Visalia community.
